THE CHALLENGE
This was the first 360˚ aerial concept we had worked on. Having invested in a GoPro Omni 360˚ camera rig, we were approached by Sarah Allen, an Independent Producer and Festival Director the The Lake District National Park. The concept was to bring the experience and beauty of the Lake District to those who, for one reason or another, could not experience the various locations, treks and scenery of the National Park. The idea was to recreate an aerial 360˚ VR experience which people could download and enjoy on a VR headset, smartphone or tablet and all within the comfort of their own home.
THE SOLUTION
Working with some very clever people at Draw & Code and the National Trust, we were able to get permission to fly at several locations around the Lake District, each giving a different aspect of the various scenic spots of the Lakes. To do this, we adapted one of our MoVI MR Gimbals to counterbalance the Omni rig beneath the aircraft, helping to maximise the amount of stability we were able to achieve to record a 360˚ flight of each of the locations. Once we had this ingested, we were able to stitch the material together and create a 3 minute edit of the fly-through experience.
